The more that we learned about creating Schools of Peace--where children treated each other with respect, where teachers showed their care and concern for each child, where conflicts could be solved peacefully--the more we were inspired to start off on a long journey. This journey took us to various parts of North America, where courageous children and their teachers were crafting schools that may appear revolutionary. They were creating Schools of Peace. (See Online Resources.) First, we considered the reality that many schools in the United States have become like locked fortresses, barricaded against any who would bring violence into classrooms. Armed police routinely patrol the halls, searching students and their see-through backpacks for hidden weapons. School shootings have occurred throughout the United States and elsewhere. The questions might arise: "Is it possible to create schools where peace is present once you enter the doors and throughout the school day?" Yes, these schools really do exist. We share this message with you, teachers who are committed to safe learning places for all children, with the hope and inspiration that a School for Peace may be possible for you and not just a dream. The school year is just beginning and it is a perfect time for your own peace journey. There is hope that even one or two innovations, something new to try out for a Peaceful Classroom, may set you on a more peaceful pathway. Just imagine Classrooms for Peace growing up in all the corners of the globe.
